Kelly Johnson doesn’t have a lot of fans. But that’s mainly because you see the 6 million next to his numbers and your eyebrow’s knit angrily. A gap like his $ to output tends to draw the ire of the blue collar fan. Yes, he getting paid more than his production is worth, but there are two pluses about him. 1, as a one year free agent sign, he’s given the Jays some (not as much as they were hoping) production in the power department. 2, he’s stayed healthy all year and played in just about every game with solid defense. Do I think the Jays should resign him with Hechavarria showing his oats? No, and certainly not at the deal he’s making now. But do I think Johnson is a terrible player? No, I think he’s a serviceable one that could be replaced with a younger, higher ceiling, and cheaper player. I also think, however, the Jays could have done much worse. Consider that, if you go by the 1 point of WAR equals 5 million dollars ratio, his .9 to 6+ million isn’t a drastic overpay. I know, I know, a million and change is a big number for most of us, but in baseball land, it’s not that terrible. All in all, he was a risk that didn’t pay out as well as it could, but didn’t break the bank by any stretch. Now, if we could just get his production to happen in some timely situations!
