The Sorrow of Romero, Reprise.

Jul 27, 2012 | Blue Jays

Yesterday I said that I thought Ricky Romero could benefit from a trip to the minors. I said that not vindictively, thinking that he should go there because he stinks or something trite that. I said it because if he continues to struggle, and said struggles are indeed a mental issue, then the team has to do what is best for the player long term and the minors might just be the best situation for him to work things out. I have every confidence that he’s a talented player, I just think there comes a point where you have to make a move for the sake of the player’s well being, even if it looks a bit drastic up front. They say that a broken bone is more desirable than a damaged muscle because a the muscle takes longer to heal, mainly because you can’t isolate a bone’s range of motion and let it heal more easily. Same thing with the mind, except worse since you’re constantly using the mind. So, the best thing you can do is remove the variables that cause it stress. That is my reasoning behind my comment.

I support Ricky fully because he is both fellow pitcher and friend, but I also know that sometimes a change of scenery can do a world of good. I hope it doesn’t to that, but, if it ultimately helps him get back into a place that allows him to enjoy the game and succeed, I’m all for it.
