Post Release Auction Party.
Well, the best way to make use of bad news is by doing something good with it. Now that I’m done for this season, it’s time to use my old gear for a new cause. Below you’ll see some of the items I will have up for my seasonal charity auction in the coming days, with ALL the proceeds going to good causes.
Which charity, you ask? Well, that depends. I’m going to pick a few of my favorites, like Autism Speaks and so on, but you can suggest others in the comments box below. If there is a clear-cut winner, I’ll gladly make a donation to it out of the proceeds we generate per your request.
A lot, or a little, it doesn’t matter how much we raise— the point is, it’s the right thing to do, and sure beats stuffing it away into a tupperware bin for the next 30 years.
Every won item will include a signed Garfoose Card or two, and a Rays T-shirt (shirts ar XL. Don’t worry, this is America, you’ll grow into it).
1. This season’s “Mr. Garfoose” glove, with a ball to be Garfoosed and signed to the winner.
2. The infamous Star Wars lunchbox, which will have secrets within that only the winning bidder can open.
3. A Tampa Bay Nike Dry Fit T-shirt… yes, I washed it.
4. A Phiten brand necklace, supposedly imbued with mystical energy that keeps Josh Beckett from turning into a werewolf.
5. A Phiten brand, Tamapa Bay bracelet (not pictured).
6. The limited edition, 4th of July Durham Bulls hat. Worn once.
7. Finally, my BLUE WINDBREAKER!!!!!! *ahem. My old Tampa Bay Rays, spring training windbreaker.
I”ll let you know where and when the auction will take place soon, on here and on twitter (most likely Ebay).

You rock more every time you post something new.
When will you be posting a link to the auction website??
Hey, Dirk….
I might have missed it, so I apologize in advance…..Where’s the auction being held (ebay, etc.?)…..If you haven’t yet announced it, I’ll stop typing and wait patiently.
Thanks.
I love that you are doing this for a charity! I’m gunna think about some charities too
Awesome idea Dirk!
I think bidders should also have to submit a picture of themselves in a Garfoose costume
I’d like to suggest a charity, one that I learned about and have supported thanks to you – Mercy Corps
Hi Dirk
Big fan! I’m a former minor league GM (Winston-Salem… back when the Bulls were in the Carolina League), and your book made laugh out loud. I saw glimpses of some of my players back in the day. Great stuff, and I eagerly await the new book next April.
I’m a Hairy Cell Leukemia survivor in Charlotte NC, and recently I’ve gotten involved with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. They do amazing work… funding leukemia research and providing services to existing patients. I hope you’ll consider them.
Best wishes!
Matt
Great idea. May I suggest a cancer research charity or one that deals with education? Is there a way using twitter to list a load and let people vote maybe?
This is a fabulous idea
I like Donors Choose, which is a group that lets grade school teachers submit grant requests for cool things they’d like to do (a friend of mine started a chess club at an inner-city school, and later started a robot club and took his kids to robot wars!! Other teachers ask for more basic stuff like books). Donors can either fund all or part of specific requests or just give some money for whatever’s needed. They are awesome.
Thanks for thinking of this — I wish you all the best, and will definitely pick up your next book (baseball? Good! Geek? Good good! Decent human being? Double plus good!)
Dirk-
Thanks for the passion with which you attack the game and life. I’ve been a Rays fan since their inception and I was cheering for you to make the team. There are a number of great charities out there. We worked with one I’d like to recommend. Amor Fe y Esperanza (AFE) is a school in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. They actually try to take kids working in the trash dump, educate them, and give their families homes. We went down there the past 2 summers to build homes for the families. Incredible organization. But there are a number of good causes. Hoping I’ll get the opportunity to bid on some items. Keep doing well in all your pursuits.
Great way to make a bad situation better. Hope you remember all your Canadian followers when you set up your eBay auction and allow for Canadian shipping and Canadian Bidders.
I’ll suggest Childrens Miracle Network as a worthy cause. Operates in Canada and the USA, providing support to Childrens Hospitals. It’s where my charitable support goes for money, time and fundraising.
