Self Talk

“Don’t change your approach. Don’t change your character.  This stuff happens to everyone, it’s part of the game.” He said it like he’d seen it happen a thousand times before. Probably not that many, but he’d been playing long enough to know failure’s cold bite, the way it goes down like bad medicine, and the danger of having an adverse reaction to it.

“When you act beat, hopeless, scared- your team believes you. You believe you. Throw it away now, don’t let it linger.” He continued. (more…)

Japan

Have I ever told you that one of my goals in baseball is to someday play in Japan? Oh yes, it totally is. The food, the cartoons, the video games… I must go there someday. Many people scoff at this because they believe baseball in the US to be the premier place to play, and maybe it is in terms of money and following. But this train of thought discounts one very big draw that Japan holds over me: adventure.

I’ve been playing baseball over here in the U S of A all my life. I’ve enjoyed my time immensely, but, the wanderlust is still here, speaking to me, beckoning me, (in subtitles, of course). What would it be like to play on the other side of the world, to play in a country that has been around for centuries longer than ours? A country so different it must feel like another world. A country that has brought us such wonderful things, like Sushi, Samurai swords, Godzilla and Super Mario?. (more…)

Branding Your Beliefs

I was in the bookstore today. I love bookstores, I love the feel of them, I love how you walk around surrounded by knowledge, and, if you’ve written anything yourself, the feeling of being ensconced by the fruit of days, months, and years of work crafted into print. There really is nothing quite like a book; it’s one of the oldest art forms through which knowledge is recorded in our civilization, and you can pick it off a shelf and hold it in your hands.

Today I was looking for a Christian book. Nothing in particular, really. I was simply hoping something would stand out to me. That the Spirit would lead me, as they say, and I’d select a book that would challenge me and nourish me at the same time. Well, something did stand out to me, just not what I was hoping for.
